BRITISH RAIDS
ON ARTOIS FRONT.
GREAT GUN'DUELS
LONDON, August 18.
Mr Philip Gibbs writes : "While Picardy is absorbing attention from the enemy our' northern lino has not been having a quiet time this last six weeks. Hardly a single night passes without raiding affairs. Round Ypres, Hohenzollern Redoubt, Givenchy, and Neuvo Chnpelle brief bloody visits have been made to the enemv.
" The artillery work on both sides has been accelerated at some parts, especially opposing the Kemmel district, held bv the Canadians. The enemy seem to 'have withdrawn the heavy guns and replaced them with quick-firing mortars, which hammered onr trenches with fiery rage, but our mortars, which are heavier, immediately retaliated. The enenw's longrange guns also shelled villages" far behind the lines, killing civilians. " The enemy must have suffered severely in this northern sector. Our artillery daily keeps up a continuous fire, smashing entanglements and laying parapets flat? It has been six weeks of bombardment, raids, and. poison-gas attacks. The enemy have had the worst of it, though it has been pretty bad for us, too. The Australians and Canadians share raids with tho British." , ■' ' .
