The preliminary bombardment was begun on Sunday, the Germans fiercely replying. " The French were equally successful south of Maurepas, and are steadilv Bearing the village Le Forest, in the' centre of the Maurepas Plateau. " South of tho Somme the difficulty is that south of the Belloy-en-Santeore Plateau, as far as Chaulnes, is reticuktixt with defences. At the main position (Yil-liers-Carbonncl, on the Paris-Bethune road) protecting trenches were carried."
