CITY RECRUITING

I ——o- . „ I y.F.W SCHEIE IX 1-L'LL SWING. I 912 RECRUITS TO DATE. | AVERAGE OF 49 PER DAY. J The new recruiting scheme lias born in operation 19 days a? far as Dunedin is concerned, and if the number of men coming before tho medical officers each night may lie taken as a fair indication of the number of-recruits enlisting day, it is safe to say that so far the scheme has justified itself. As far as the personal rauvass is concerned, it may bo that the hardest work is still ahead, "as a. house-to-house visitation will have to be enforced in order to dig up slackers. When, however, the committees who have been engaged in "working" the 19 blocks into which the City has been divided survey the results of their labors they should not hesitate about proceeding with the canvass. Just before the new scheme was launched recruiting was at low ebb in Dunedin, but in something like 19 days 942 men have registered and have been dealt with by the medical and dental officers. The fgures quoted are necessarily only approximate, but they givo a good indication of tho actual position. Tho number of men who have been passed a; fit is 278, while 203 have been rejected as quite unfit for active, service. At first glance the latter number appears to be somewhat large, but it has to be again pointed out that many men who have been conscious of defects are now coming forward in order to secure tho badge of exemption. As a matter of fact, they havo been invited to do so. The temporarily unfits number 406, of whicJi about 215 are dental cases. As far as the medical officers are concerned, these men are fit as soon as they havo their teeth attended to. The operation cases and cases of men deferred for a given period—generally six months—for treatment are somewhat problematical, but •a fair number of recruits should be secured from them, although not in tho near future. Tho results ol recruiting since the inception of the new schenio are therefore : ' *>„ - 278 Teeth _ „. ... 215 Operation i[g Treatment 75 Average number of recruits dealt with per day, 49.
