BRAVEST DEED OF THE YEAR, The Stanhope gold medal, which is awarded for the bravest deed of the past year performed in and around the British Isles, was given rocenllv by the Royal i Humane Society (England) to Cecil i Hctherington, a ship's apprentice belongj ing to Allendale town, in Northumberland, | whose action was thus described officially ! | At 11.30 p.m. on August 15, 1915, the steamship lacona, while on a voyage from Middlesbrough to Montreal, was either torpedoed or struck a mine, and sank in two minutes. There was no time for launching boats, all hands going down with the ship. The captain and nine others came to the. surface clinging to some wreckage. Some 10 minutes later what was thought to be a boat was seen floating some 75 yards away. As the men were exhausted Hetherington volunteered to swim to the object, winch he did, and, [ finding a boat, succeeded in climbing into her and bringing her back to the wreckage, and in this way was the means of I saving 13 lives, the remainder of the orew, 25 in number, being lost. After i five hours in the boat they were picked lup and landed. Hetherington, who is j still in his teens, is 6ft 3in in height, I his robust build being of great service to him during the trying ordeal. A GOOD SPECULATION. With "Old Glory," as the American Flag is termed by those from the land of Stars and Stripes, flying at the foremast, the steamer Republic is now on her way to San Franoisoo from Papeete, in which harbor she lay for 12 months, almost totally submerged. It was as the German steamer Walkure, and as a direct result of shell fire from men-o'-war of the same nationality, that the Republic began her sojourn in such an unusual position, and whilst lying submerged she became the property of an American syndicate, which secured her at a very low figure from the French Government. The moment negotiations were completed the syndicate sent out to the French port a complete salvage outfit in the schooner Chehalis, and operations began under the guidance of Captain Curtis, who had the satisfaction of setting the vessel afloat and paving the way for the syndicate to make a good thing out of the speculation.
