SANITARY CONDITIONS, HEALTH OFFICER’S SUGGESTION. [Special, xo the ‘Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, February 29. The City Council last night received" a request from tbs District Health Officer urging on tho council the need of taking every possible step to improve the sanitary condition of the district in view of the _ infantile paralysis danger, 'paying special attention to the question of garbage, the_ removal of insanitary backyards, stables, and manure, and the fly nuisanco generally. He recommended also than a house-to-house inspection be forthwith instituted. During the discussion bv the council it was suggested that .additional temporarv inspectors should be engaged. Cr Otley said it was' not true to say that tho city was net dean. Everything necessary to keep the city in order had been done, and it was for the householders to see that their premises were kept m order. He was afraid the council were getting a little “nervy.” The Mayor said he was not at al l " nervy,” but it was the duty of the council to do everything possible to prevent any trouble. The present staff of inspectors was intended for normal conditiononly. Eventually the District Health Offi cer’s letter was referred to the Sanitary Committee. The Mayor said that a grave complaint had been made to him regarding the. ventilation of picture theatres. A doctor had informed Idm that he had traced a number of scarlet fever cases to a picture theatre. _ He considered the council should see to it that adequate ventilation was provided. Tin's matter was referred to the By-laws Committee.
