Regarding the recent arrest of Car) Seegner who was German Consul in New Zealand until the outbreak of the war and Lothar Eilander, who at that time acted as Mr Seegner's secretary, the Auckland 'Star' states that Seegner was Consul in the Dominion from 1892 to 1914 His rather conspicuous white top-hat had made him a noticeable figure in the Auckland streets. Residents'at Parneli have complained that Eilander had been =eer to regularly meet Mr Seegner, salute him on meeting, enter into conversation with him, eventually salute him, and leave. bcvcxal oi' the losidents considered tii<?.s~ regular meetings to be suspicious, and they ..also felt that this keeping up of official salutation by a man who had resigned his German official position to become a Britisher was in hostility and intended to wound British susceptibilities Seegner has been a naturalised British subject lor more than 3D ve 3 rs.
