SUEZ CANAL AND EGYPT.
t t PARIS, February 8. ‘Le Temps’s ’ Geneva correspondent says tli.it Prince Leopold of Bavaria is to command a Turco-German army attack upon the Suez Canal in the spring. It is reported that between 30,000 and 40,000 troops are concentrated at Smyrna. Artillery ot all calibres has been sent to Syria, and a motor road has been opened between Damascus and Jerusalem. ‘ Le Temps ’ says that Germany has been boasting that 100,000. Germans and 600,000 Turks are about to invade Egypt. If so, they will find the defences of the canal, upon which the British Staff has lavished every effort during the year, include a network of railways and a greater number ot troops at all weak spots than the Turks are able to command, in addition to more and heavier artillery and abundance of ammunition. Despite these boastings, everything shows that the preparations are discouraged, and that Germany is ready to abandon the expedition.
