, 10 THE EDITOR. - Sir, —A few remarks on the above be of interest to those who ouy a bottle of whisky occasionally. One shilling a gallon means an increase of 2d per bottle. Let us see how the publican is affected by this change. Whisky that was sold at 5s a bottle is- now in many hotels retailed at 5s 6d for the same brand; • therefore the publican gains 4d, while the public loses 6d. Evidently the publicans do not like to deal in : coppers. Like the totalisator, when declaring dividends, it is 6d or nothing. It is the old, old story. The poor man suffers every time. For instance, those who can afford to buy two gallons at a time can obtain whisky, I believe, overproof, at Is a gallon increase, while the man who cannot afford to order .two gallons at a time has to pay at the rate of 3s per gallon more. — I am, etc..
