THE LATE DR BATCHELOR.

TO THE EDITOR. _ Sir, —I read with interest your appreciation of the late Dr Batchelor, who, by his public spirit and enthusiasm, has rendered great and lasting service to the whole community. By all who knew him his loss will be deeply felt. To Dr Batchelor the University owes much. He was unwearied in its service, and anxious at all times to further its interests. This was shown in a special manner when the proposal was made to erect a pathological and bacteriological block in King street. At once Dr Batchelor came to our help. He wrote in favor of the proposal, and joined the committee which sought to raise the necessary funds. In his rooms the committee met weekly, and still I can hear the words of good cheer with which he s<ji:ght to encourage us. I deeply regret that Dr Batchelor has not been spared to see the completion of the building for which he did so much, and for the erection of which a tender lias lately been accepted. I am sure I speak for every member of the University Council in thus acknowledging our indebtedness to the good doctor. —I am, etc., Andrew Cameron, Chancellor Otago University. September 2.
