Mr John Black, one of the oldest- settlers in the Tokomairiro Plains, died on the 27th ult., at his residence. Waitahmui, at the advanced age of 84. Tho deceased was well known in that district, and was generally respected. From the ‘ livening .Star,’ July 7, 1870

Telegrams from Wellington state that th© Hon. the Defence Minister informed th© House to-day that 34 Natives, who have been in rebellion at the Opotiki settlement-, have surrendered with their arms. . . Th© Ballot Bill, with, the
amendments, passed its second reading last night. The discussion of th© Financial Statement commences to-morrow evening at 7 o’clock. . . . At. 2.7 p.m. this afternoon another so veto shock of earthquake took place, shaking the office violently ; lamps and clocks were also violently shaken about. It lasted about 35see, and was accompanied by a loir rumbling noise. There was a slight trembling till 2.9 p.m., when there was another shock with a loud rumbling noise, but with not quite such force as th© first. It lasted about ISsoc. During the first shock th© bay was quite smooth. On the second shock on© large roller rose about th© middle of the bay and fell on the beach.
