TIMBER WORKERS IN CONFERENCE
At the conference of the Xew Zealand Timber Workers’ Federation at Wellington yesterday remits wre carried as follow : —■
That the Government ba asked to amend the Workers’ Compensation Act so that half-pay be allowed to workers irrespective of the time a worker is incapacitated by accident. That the Government be asked to increase the duty on imported sashes, moulding, and manufactured timber to 50 per cent., and in the cases of doors to fix a duty of 5s on doors and 7s 6d on IJin doors. That the Government be urged more strictly to enforce the regulations in connection with the Accommodation Act, 1913. That the Arbitration Act be amended to provide that unions shall be permitted to use their accumulated funds as they think fit, whether for political purposes or otherwise, according to tho wishes of the majority of members of t!ha union.
It was decided to recommend the incoming executive to consider ways and means for the purpose of thoroughly organising the timber workers of the Dominion.
A remit that the conference consider the question of drawing up a Dominion award and submit it to all affiliated unions for their ocmsidsratkm was discussed, and finally it was decided to refer the matter to the executive, and ask them to draw up a Dominion award, and submit it to all affiliated unions as early as possible.
