PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council, held last night, was attended by Gra Fail (chairman), Prattley, Anderson, Mawson, Stevenson, Isbister, Percy, Williamson, and Powell. Tlie Town Clerk apologised for th© absence of the Mayor (Mr T. Scollay). Cr Fail was appointed Acting Mayor. —Corresjjonder.ee.—

The Minister of Railways (Hon. W. H. Hurries) wrote acknowledging receipt of the council’s letter urging that the widening of George street wharf be gone on with. The council’s representations had been noted, and would receive attention.— Received. G. P. Philip, lessee of the council's endowment at Dunback, wrote informing the council that ho had been obliged to expend a - considerable sum iu improvements to buildings, and asked that tho valuations tor improvements be extended from £I.OOO to £1,400. —Referred to the Reserves Committee.

J lie hen. secretary of the Fire Brigade wrote stating that tho following officers had been appointed:—Captain, W. Dougherty; lieutenant, S. Moir; senior foreman, C. Macdonald; junior foreman, tV. M'Cormack; treasurer, D. M'Donald. An invitation was extended to the {Mayor and councillors to inspect the brigade’s plant on the evening of July 23.—-On the motion of Or Anderson the appointments were approved. As many councillors as possible would take advantage of the invitation.

—Reports.— 'The Works Committee reported that tho streets and channels had received the usual attention during the past fortnight. Some 40 loads of metal had been spread on the Beach load at tho railway goods shed. The asphalt had been repaired at the urinal in Beach street. A crossing had been put in at the stone building at Beach street, and repairs had been mad© to the roads in George, street, Kaio lane, aud Constitution street. Twenty-five casks of tar had been purchased from Ilia Gas Company, at a cost of £26 5s The matter of the right-of-way from George street to the railway station had been considered by tho committee, but owing to the cost of securing tlie land they recommended thatthe question be dropped in tho meantime. —Adopted.

The Sanitary Committee reported that the Xo. 1 sewer at Fox street was now practically completed arid ready for the house connections to be made. Seeing that there were other works that were pressing just now, the second portion would l e delayed for a time.—Adopted. The Fire Brigade Committee recommended the council to add the following clauses to the regulations governing the management and control of the Brigade :■ — (1) The Port Chalmers Volunteer Fire Brigade are a volunteer tiro brigade under the jurisdiction of the Port Chalmers Borough Council, and the captain of (he biigade is directly responsible to the council for the control and efficiency of tho brigade. (2) Any alterations, amendments, and additions to the brigade by-laws shall be submitted to the council for approval before coming into force. The captain and lieutenant shall be elected annually by the brigade and their appointments affirmed by the council, and they shall not be removed from office without the consent of the council. (4) Subordinate officers shall bo elected by the brigade, and their names submitted for the approval of the council. l 5) The brigade shall furnish the council with a copy of their audited annual balance-sheet.—Adopted. 'lhe Finance Committee reported the debit, balance stood at £1,744 3s 6d. The receipts for the pant fortnight amounted to £1,514 9s, and the expenditure to £1,652 Is 6d.—ln moving the adoption, of the report. Cr Stevenson' said the receipts for the quarter ended June 30, 1914, amounted to £933. and the expenditure to £1,335. The bank overdraft was about £3OO less than at the same time last year. The expenditure for the .quarter- was lower by £177 than for the corresponding quarter of 1913.—Adopted. Ihe Reserves Committee reported that tbs work done during the lasi fortnight had been lifting and planting out foiest, trees, making and planting' putting-; of willows and poplars in Port on the slip off Beach road, lining out shrubs from last year's cutting bed, making and planting out cuttings of shrubs for next year, and shovelling some of tho, silt out of tho reservoir.—Adopted. Tho Water Officer reported having sold 1,143 tuns of water for the month of Juno for a revenue of £B4. A water service union in Magnetic street had b?en taken cut, cleaned, and replaced. A number of tests were being made on the higher levels with a view to finding out tho quantity of water available, for household purposes. It was expected that a start would shortly bo made with the laying of the larger water main in Wickliife terrace.—Adopted-
