FIRES
The fire on the Te Aroha mountain is subsiding. On Friday overling a fringe of flame a mile long advanced slowly down on to the town, and was watched by hundreds of people. Huge trees, 60ft high, were levelled in an incredibly short time, and the blaze made when the flames caught the big nikau trees caused great illuminations. 'The. natural bush and the plantations destroyed will take years to replace. The danger to the town is past. Fire broke out on .Saturday afternoon in an immense heap of baied wool stacked in Messrs Murray, Roberts, and f'o.'s wool store at Port Ahui'ii (Xapier). With great difficulty the brigade managed to subdue the flames. The total damage is confined to about 200 bales of wool. An Auckland message stales that a sixroomed house with, furniture and effects, also an empty shop in Mount Eden road, owned and occupied by A. f'hillener, were destroyed by fire at midnight. The occupants escaped in their nightclothe:-. The furniture, was not insured. It is understood that there was an insurance of £l5O on the house and shop.
