FORTY-FOUR YEARS TO-DAY.

i Tho centenary of Captain Cook’s landing in tho colony will be celebrated at Waikouaiti with a picnic, which promises to be a grand affair.—From the ‘ Evening Star,’ October 7, 1869. The following was published as an “extra”;—The operations against the enemy have been delayed by bad weather. On the morning of the 4th inst. our forces engaged Te Kooti at Iwitauroa, and-defeated him with heavy loss. The European and native forces combined stormed his position gallantly. The loss of the enemy was 35 killed, some of them men of note. Our loss was Captain, St. George and two Wanganui natives killed, two wounded. Te Kooti bolted.—Napier telegram. * * * * * * •# . A special meeting of/the Acclimatisation Society this afternoon was attended by Messrs W. D. Murison (in the chair), R. Oliver, A. Garrick, G. K. Burton, E. M'Glashan, and A. Eccles, to hear Mr Clifford’s report on his recent mission to Tasmania. Ho had obtained 1,000 ova for this province, and some for the Southland and Canterbury societies. The ova were in very good condition, very few' being bad. These for the Canterbury society were likely to turn out well, but some were not quite so good-looking as the others. That was owing to the condition of the boxes, which were only filled with a few pounds of snow, while the Otago boxes each contained Jcwt. The prospects of the entire shipment, w’hich was a better one than he brought over last year, were good on the whole. He had purchased for the society several pens of prize poultry, including white and grey Dorkings, Spanish, * Brahmapootras, Shanghais, golden and silver-pencilled Hamburgs—26 in all—and all were in caratal condition. It was resolved to dispose of the poultry by auction, preference being given to members of the society desirous of purchasing. Fimm the ‘ Evening Star,’ October 7, 1869.
