CRICKET ASSOCIATION

A meeting of the committee of tho Otago Cricket Association was hold last evening, and attended by Messrs J. J. Clark (president), Wycherley, Thomson, Nelson, Restieaux, Martin, Holden, Haig, M'Cutcheon, and Ritchie, E. Beechey, hon. secretary of the Wellington Cricket Association, wrote asking what date would be suitable for a match to be played in Otago this season between Otago and Wellington.—lt was decided to suggest January 1, 2, and 3 as suitable dates. If these dates were considered unsuitable, Wellington to suggest other dates. A copy of the rules governing the Hawke Cup was received from the New Zealand Cricket Council.—The committee decided to instruct their delegates on the council to uphold the claims of Southland in regard to the playing of the Hawke Cup matches.

D. MT.achlan, a member of the Grange Club, wrote asking permission to transfer to the Carisbrook Club, as he wished to improve his cricket by getting, better practice on the Carisbrook Ground,—The Grange Club wrote that tho reason given for wishing to leave was not, in their opinion, a satisfactory one.—After some discussion tho transfer was granted. The secretary was instructed to write to the Otago Rugby Union asking if they had any objection to the association issuing tickets giving the holders the right to attend any matches during the season played at the Carisbrook and Caledonian Grounds. Mr Martin was appointed sole selector for tho season, and Messrs Wycherley, Martin, and Thomson were appointed a grade committee. It was decided to open the season on October 25. On. Mr Wycherley’s motion it was resolved—“ That tho committee express disappointment that a portion of the Oval is not yet thoroughly fit for cricket, and that the attention of the Citizens' Recreation Society be drawn to the fact, with a view to hastening on the work to that end.” —The Australian Tom*.— The Chairman said he had been shown a private letter received by Mr A. Downes, in which it was pointed out that in nominating men for inclusion in the New Zealand -team to visit Australia the selectors should keep in view the young players—those cricketers who would improve by the tour. He (tho speaker) had asked Mr Downes if he had shown this letter to hia co-selectors, but he now learnt that he had not done so, and they would therefore have to the Otago names already selected to the New Zealand Council. The men nominated were Tuckwell, Hopkins, Austin, Siedeberg, M'Farlaue, Torrance, and Condlifl'e.

Mr Thomson asked if these men had signified their intention to make the tour if finally selected ? It was only a waste of time to nominate men if they did not intend to accompany the touring team if finally selected. Mr Rcstieaux said they should try to nominate players who would improve their cricket by the tom-, and be ox use to their province and the Dominion on their re turn.

The Chairman said it seemed to him that the instructions of the committee were definite—that they had to submit nominations without any restrictions at all. There was, however, no reason why the committee should not add other nominations to those selected.

The committee then went into committee to consider whether they would approve of the nominations submitted. It was finally decided that the nominations as submitted should stand, without any additions, and that the secretary be instructed to ascertain if the players named are available, if chosen by the New Zealand selectors, to make the trip.
