IMPERIAL DEFENCE
NO OVERSEA CONFERENCE. SOAIE POSSIBLE CAUSES. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, October 6. The ‘Daily Telegraph’ (U.) states that the Government's decision not to summon a naval conference will occasion widespread disappointment, particularly overseas. Australia is anxious for advice and guidance, and New Zealand is hesitating in the hope that she may further assist in naval defence. South Africa and Canada, are also desirous of expert advice. Tiro wriler thinks that Air Asquiths decision is duo to internal political difficulties. The Cabinet could not have foreseen the resentment aroused even in some Liberal quarters by the operation of the Parliament Act, and is particularly surprised at the character of Ulster’s opposition. The Cabinet is further disinclined to invite representatives of the Dominions until a General Election has cleared the political atmosphere. A consultation on the naval affaire of the Empire will thus be deferred until 19.15. Meanwhile, individual overseas Alinisters can visit England and meet the Defence Committee and the heads of the Admiralty and the War Office.
