MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL

The above council met last night, 1 benbeing present the .Mayor {Mr Qnelch), Crs Cl. M'Lood, C. 11. Leith. T. Williams. Callander, M. Brown, and T. Aitken. Tho Town Clerk, Foxton, wrote inviting the council to request the Minister of Internal _ Affairs to insert a clause in the Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill legalising the owning,of picture shows by boroughs, and forwarding returns showing that the Foxton Borough had made a net profit in 35 nights in 1912 of £547 Is 6d ; to March 51, 1913. on 100 nights, a profit of £961 14s; and since April a profit of £402 16s 9d.—The Mayor said there was evidently money in picture shews when run by local councils.—lt was resolved to support the Foxton Council in securing an amendment of the-law in the direction desired. Mr John Logan wrote calling attention to the Hooding of bis property caused by the damming back of recent flood waters by tho culvert across Carlyle street, and requesting the council to take action to prevent a recurrence of tho damage. —Referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. Mr 1). F. Gibson wrote drawing attention to the almost impassable state, of tho road loading to bis slaughter yard.— Referred to the Works Committee to report to tho council. Tho Works Committee report, .detailing the work carried out during (he month, was adopted. Tho General Committee reported having conferred with tho City Electrical Engineer, apd had arrangccf'to have the transformer for street lights placed on tho back part of Coronation Hall site; that the Tennis Club had been granted the use of the pavilion on the‘recreation ground during the summer months. The council recommended that, the footpath from the entrance gate to the pavilion he grubbed.— Adopted. The Finance Committee reported receipts since last meeting, £45 Os 2d : wages paid, £6l 5s 6d.-—Adopted. A special meeting of the council was held to consider a by-law dealing with the exemption of (he side of Gladstone road, abutting on Young's property,* subject to the condition that the building line bo set. back for 53ft trom tbe centre of tho road on (bat side.—Tho Under-Secretary intimated that such exemption would be granted if the council desired.—Consideration of the matter was bold over for a fortnight.
