PALMERSTON NOTES.

Whitebait is very plentiful in the Shag River this season. Last week a quantity was being hawked round the town. It is very- seldom that this happens in Palmerston. Last Wednesday was the opening day of tho fishing season, and a number of anglers were out on the Shag River. In the higher reaches good sport was to be had, but lower down the trout, although said to be numerous, were hard to catch owing to the presence of so many whitebait. A good season is looked forward to, tho river being fairly free from weed. The task of top-dressing tho tennis courts is completed, and from all appearances the work has been well done. Opening day is fixed for Wednesday, October 15, when afternoon tea will be provided by the lady members of the club. The Beautifying Society seem to have put off starting work until too late to do much this year. The Bowling Club have not yet decided what day tho green will'be declared open. The green looks in splendid order for the time of year, and if this fine warm weather continues should bo ready for play within the next fortnight. Labor Day is mentioned as the likely date for the opening.

There was a large attendance at the meeting of the Jubilee Committee on Saturday night, and a lot of business was got through. The order of the procession was arranged and prizes for several features in it were voted. The programmes of the sports and procession will be sent out to all parts of the district during the next week. The tug-of-war between the different school districts, for which a prizo of £5 is piven, seems to bo creating a lot of interest; several teams are reported to be in training already. The committee are trying to arrange for a parade of all the men belonging to the Mounted Hussars and the Territorials for that day-, such parade to count as a full official parade.—Own correspondent October 6.
