THE DEVON SCANDAL.

REVERSAL OF THE FINDING.

[Special to the Star.]

i M ELLINGTON. September 19. Tno reversal of the former finding in the Devon case is not only regarded locally as an astonishing thing.‘but A will certainly lead now to a review of the whole of the harbor lights. The essence of the. new finding (which has met with general approval) is that the- small red light on Falron Shoal practically wrecked tho Devon. Ibis light, though long opposed by'master mariners as likely to be. mistaken for the red sector of Somes Island light, has been one of the Harbor Board’s fads. The whole question of port lights is to come up for review at next meeting of tho hoard. One of the notable features of the inquiry was tfie manner in which the harbor master (Captain Johnston) fenced ivith this important matter when questioned by counsel for Captain Caunce. His chief resource, when under fire was to fall back on the statement: “ Oh, 'well,' I saw 'it in tho newspapers. - ’ A sterner question is, however. now lying in front of him, and (nnkro proceedings aro taken in camera) next meeting of the Wellington Harbor Board should be more than interesting.
