They played Gabites as emergency. The teams to take the field were; South Canterbury.—Goal, Bowkett; backs, J. Wallace and C. Rix; halves— Nixon, Anderson, and Berry; forwards— Llewlin, Alason, Blackham, Gabites, and N. Edwards.

Play commenced by Otago making a hot onslaught on South Canterbury goal, but Rix got his forwards going, and they looked dangerous, but Alorrow coming to light, play was again carried into South Canterbury's 25. Edwards got jwssession of ball, and looked dangerous, but Otago found refuge in a corner, from which their opponents secured no benefit. Play was again quickly taken to tho other end of tho field, and Thompson drew first blood with a clinking shot, which badly beat Bowkett. From the following bully M'Cluro got away with the ball at his stick, and, taking it right into the circle, scored an easy goal. The game continued m a very even manner for some time, the ball travelling quickly from one end "of the field to the other, until Nome Edwards .again secured possession, and South Canterbury might have scored had Alorrow been unable to get possession of tho ball, which he sent down to his forwards in fine style, and AFClure soon added another goal. Thompson again broke a wav, only to be repulsed by Charlie Rix, who more than once proved a thorn in ’Varsity’s flesh. Otago continued to prose, but South Canterbury took a turn in the game, and for some time looked dangerous, until at last Blackham got the ball into the circle, and after a hot scramble, in which most of tlie South Canterbury forwards participated, the first goal was notched. At half-time tho score was; Otago University 5 goals, South Canterbury 1 goal. . bouth Canterbury looked more promising in the second half, and, having the sun at their backs, forced Otago to concede a corner. Anderson missed a. shot at goal, and play continued very even till Alason got his forwards going, but without result. South Canterbury were forced to hit over n<? ’ kh© resulting corner gavo ArClurc a good opportunity of adding am other goal, which he did with a hot shot; Ryburn broke away on his own, and passed all the South Canterbury backs. On reaching the edge of the circle, Bowkett stood anxiously awaiting results, and Rj burns hot shot swept past him, finding a safe lodging-place in tho net. Bowkett should have rushed Ryburn. ’Varsity continued their attack, and from a nice pass from Fitt, Slater added their sixth goal. South Canterbury now seemed, to have lost heart, and Thompson soon added another goal from a difficult angle, and the game ended :

Otago University ... 7 goals. ■South Canterbury ... 1 goal. The match was most interesting, and was extremely fast from start to finish. Rix, the South Canterbury full-back, played a great game, and did some heroic work for his side, while Anderson also put in a big lot of hard yvork. Alason, Ed wards, and Blackham yvere the pick of the Northerners’ forwards, while the ’Varsity fqnvards were not by any means up to their usual form, although al times they gaio brilliant flashes of play and an inclica tion of possibilities had they been fully extended. Alorrow played really well at full-back, and Davies was a constant souce of annoyance to the South Canterbury s forwards. Slater did yeoman service' at centre half, being ably supported by Smith and Wilson. Bannennan acquitted himself well of the little that was required of him. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY.
