YAUHT AND MOTOR RAGES

Yesterday morning, at 6.50 o'clock, six yachts wore started for a race to Oamaru. This has now become a yearly fixture, and is eagerly looked forward to by yachtsmen. This year they were started irom the. Harrington Point wharf, so that there was jio chance of their . being interfered with by steamers coming in or going out. Sharp to time the starter {Mr G. G. Smith) gave the signal, and the yachts set out in their long journey. At tho start the wind was light southerly. The Matua was scratch boat. The Marita, under yawl rig, with a handicap of 80min, was first across the line, closely followed by Revenge (80min), Matua (scratch), Annis (40min), Ripple (oOmin), and Myrtle (an Oamaru yacht, 170min). Tho motors, seven in number, were started under the Maifc Foy system : that is, taking the time off at the start, so that tho first boat over the finishing line wins. Tho first launch was sent off at 7 a.m. with 120min start, then the Mavis (105min) at 7.15, followed by Kate (54min) at 8.6. Vida (lOrain) and Atalanta (lOmin) at 8.50, and Alleyne and Romouri (scratch) at 9 a.m. At Moeraki tho. wind changed round to the North-east, and the boats had a good stiff broezo for the rest of the trip. Tho race for motors resulted as follows: -—Mavis 1, Atalanta 2, Romuri 3. The yacht results were: Matua (scratch). lOh 19min 58sec, 1; Marita (SOmin), 12li smin 37sec, 1; Annis (40min). llh 50min 35sec, 3; Ripple (60min), 12h 13mm 33.5e/; 4. At nine o'clock the Revenge and Myrtle had not reached the finishing line.
