-MELBOURNE, March 20. (Received. .March 20, at 9.20 a.m.) The Minister of the Interior, Mr U . lalley, re) erring to the preference now granted British manufacturers. who arc supplying material for the transcontinental railway, declared “If we h.iNe to pay 4,000 per cent, preference we are prepared to do it. This country is _ the offspring of Groat Britain, and this Government have no regard for tariff considerations or other matters when it comes to a question of extending our relations with the Mother Country. The Australian Government, h c . added, “had no ill-feeling against the manufacturers ot other countries but, all the same, they would pay 1.000 per cent, and even more to get their things made where their own flesh and blood would reap the benefit.”
