A PETONE MYSTERY.

[Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 6. A sensational disappearance is reported, from Petone. A man named Carter was proceeding to lock up his house, which is isolated and surrounded hr trees, when he heard a man approaching from behind. Seeing Carter the man bolted. Carter called to hict son, who had just retired, and ho jumped out of the window and chased the burglar ever the fence. . Neither has been seen .since. No one saw Carter jump through the window, but it is presumed lie must have done go, as some of his clothes wore in Ids mom. Carter holds a chief engineer's certificate. He had been absent from home for six or seven years.
