THE NEW YORK POLICE.

ASTOUNDING ALLEGATIONS.

The aldermanic inquiry into the police conmtions m Xew York, resulting from the murder of the gambler Rosenthal, keeps unfolding discreditable revelations, or at least allegations which need strong rebutting evidence to remove the sinister they give of the conduct, of the. force, says the 'Daily Mail.' The latent compromising testimony suggests that not only have some police' officers encouraged crime by inciting its commission, but that they have also helped themselves to loot taken from captured mirghrrs. and have even gathered booty from burglar-raided houses.

Benjamin Levy, a typical product, of the -New York underworld, swore that the Deputy Commissioner of the Police (Mr Dougherty), second in rank to the chief, had prompted him to incite three " crooks " to commit a burglary, that he was promised £25, and that the men were now in gaol. He explained that he opened the door of the warehouse marked for the robberv" when the police with whom he was 'in league had smashed it. in order to "make it appear that it had been forced open, and that the policemen detailed to be on hand to capture the burglars had helped themselves to the booty. Levy wound up this explanation by saying : "Any time the police wanted a burglary they t'old me to go and get a burglar, and I trot one for them. Every time they wanted promotion they instigated a bursrlary, and got me to etari it. !>

Th» robbery in question was that of a wc-rehouse, from which ostrich feathers, valued at £1,500, were stolen, and for ~. . ~,. . _- —>:££, which four men were convicted.
