NEW YEAR FIRES
PICTURE SHOW AND TOTALISATOR. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, January 1. A fire broke out in Williams's Crystal Palace Theatre in George street last night. The brigade confined the fire, to the film room and the winter garden, which, were practically destroyed. The glass roof of the winter garden collapsed, under the weight of water, and fell"on the heads of the firemen, knocking them over and denting their helmets. The theatre was packed at the time of the outbreak, but the audience were quietly cleared, and there was no panic. The damage is estimated at about £30,000. A valuable stock of films was destroyed. (Received January 2, at 9.30 a.m.) The 'Herald's' estimate of the loss through the Crystal Palace fire is £50,000. BRISBANE, January 1. A fire destroyed the totalis?tor machines at the Eagle Farm racecourse.
