A SERIOUS OFFENCE
SEAMAN IN TROUBLE. A seaman named Paul Link, a German, appeared in the City Police Court this morning to answer a charge that, being a seaman aboard the ship Mamari, hn did damage to that ship at Port Chalmers amounting to £9. The Sub-inspector explained that the offence occurred on December 30, when accused went aboard the ship under the influence of liquor, and in the stokehold broke three pressure gauges valued at £3 each. Accused did not appear to understand much English, but said he remembered nothing about the alleged offence. The captain of the vessel said accused had given some trouble at Gravesend, but had since behaved very well. The chief engineer said that the offence might have been a serious one, as steam was heing got up to take the vessel up to Dunedin. In answer to the Magistrate, the captain said the Mamari expected to g*et away on the home trip about the end of the month. Accused was convicted and ordered to forfeit £9, the amount of the damage done, out of his wages, and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
