FIRES
A RESIDENCE AT CAVERSHAM. A fire broke out early yesterday morning in a two-story wooden house in College street, Caversham, owned and occupied ,>y Mr T. E. Jeffcoate, of Stronach, Morris, and Co.. The occupants of the house were Mr Jeffcoate, hi;, son, and the housemaid, all of whom escaped scantily clothed. Mr Jeffcoate went to bed at 11.50 on Saturday night, and was roused by the persistent .ringing of a bell, caused no doubt by the heat affecting the wires. The fire had .i strong hold in the kitchen, and Mr Jeffcoate rung up Constable Heard, who promptly communicated with the Caversham Brigade. The latter arrived quickly, and under the supervision of Captaon Souness were successful in confining the outbreak to the kitchen. It began, apparently, between the kitchen chimney and a cupboard. The damage to the house and Mr Jeff route's furniture is estimated at £2OO. The building was insured for £9OO with the Standard Companv, and the furniture for £540 with the Phoenix anc Xorth British Companies.
