PUSHING ON THE ESTIMATES
[Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October 5. Consideration of the Education Estimate s proceeded after the Telegraph Office closed at 2 a.m. The Acting Minister (Hon. T. Mackenzie) stated that a. Bill had been prepared affording teachers the right of appeal in the matter of transfers. A motion by Mr Wright in favor of additional capitation on tho average attendance was lost by 21 votes to 17. Tho member for Wellington South also wanted reform in the system of the election of schc%l committees. The discussion was carried on till 3 o'clock, when the amendment was put, and lost by'2B to 12. In reply to complaints that the students' training colleges were not taking up science subjects, the Minister said the syllabus vras being revised this year. At 4.15 a.m. Sir James Carroll suggested adjourning tho Estimates till 2.30 p.m., but as this was not entertained the committee continued till the whole vote was passed, and the House did not rise till 5 a.m. [Only two classes of the main Consolidated Estimates—Defence and Lands —now remain to be dealt with.]
