SCHOOL CONCERT.
The High Street School Qymnasimn was well filled with supporters and friends last evening, when a ,ycry Scotch, concert was held for the purpose of augmenting the school funds. The programme, consisted of items by the Burns Club Choir (under tho conductorship of Mr &■ Patorson) and a number of capable vocalist* and instrumentalists, who rendered their items with real Scottish spirit. A'bagpipe selection by Pipe-major M'Calliim, ~of the Dunedin Pipe Band, opened .the entertainment, and tho choir were I heard to advantage in the part song ! 'M'Lean's Gathering.' Mrs Wakefield j Holmes obtained great applause for her rendering of '' When the Kye Come Hame' and also 'Jock o' Hazeldea'n.' Another favorite was Mr W. H. M'Ken7,ie, who sang ' Blue Bonnets,' and later on ' Bortnie Dundee,' in a very pleasing manner. To the xrreat delight of the young folk present little Ethel' Carter, smartly clad in her Highland costume, danced a Highland fling and a sword dance: Mr Martin Duff gained credit from the audience for his effort in the favorite song ' Mary o' Argyle,' and on his return sang ' The Lea Rig.' Miss Aggie Allan received an ovation for her song ' Cam ye by Athol.' A recitation by Miss Alice Austin, entitled 'Young Lochinvar,' was a much-enjoyed item. A very interesting address oh the ' Life of Sir Walter Scott'.was delivered by Mr W. B. M'Ewan during the evening, and credit is due to this gentleman for "the manner in which he dealt with some of Sir Walter's poems. Miss E. Wright accompanied the sin-gers. At the conclusion' of ths concert Mr I). Wishart (chairman of the School Committee) thanked Mr M'Ewan for his appropriate address, and also moved a hearty vote of thanks to those who contributed to the programme.
