' Telegrams were received from the Hon. Thos. Mackenzie detailing the progress in the House of the Mosgiel Empowering Bill, and stating that it had passed the committee stages and its second reading, and the third reading was set down for October 5.—-Received. The Town Clerk, Rangiora _ Borough Council, wrote drawing the council's attention to the fact that " moving pictures of a very undesirable char<actcr are being exhibited in the Dominion,” which were utterly unlit for children. The letter asked for the council's .assistance in bringing about an improvement. —Received. Samuel Fogg applied for a reduction in the current year's rates on bis property recently , destroyed hv tire, and known as the Volunteer Hall.—lt was resolved that the applicant be informed that there was no provision in the Rating Act authorising the council to remit rates in the case of lire. The rates having been levied and payable before the destruction of the place, it could not he revalued for this year's rates. If the place remained unbuilt on for a nr length of time a revaluation would be made for next year’s rates. The Clerk. Tnapeka County Council, wrote stating thot at a meeting of his council a resolution was passed to the effect that the council looked with alarm upon the ever-increasing levies that were made on local bodies by tile Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, and considered that the cost of maintaining and supporting institutions for the treatment of tubercular disease should be borne ontircly by the Government, and that all counties and boroughs in Otago he written to requesting their support, and co-operation in the matter. —Cr Cheyne moved that the letter be received, but Or Soaton moved as an amendment that the letter be referred to the General Committee, remarking that it was an important matter, which should not be shelved.—The amendment was carried. —Reports.— -The Works Committee reported inter alia that the standard fall for water pipes had been fixed at a.-minimum of not lese than 1 in 72. In regard to Mr Soutor's application for a lamp on the pole at Mrs Bolting's gate, the committee reported that they did not consider tliat a lamp was required at the place indicated, and as the council's contract with the City Corporation made no provision for supply for private purposes it was recommended that tlio application bo declined.—The report was adopted. The ranger reported having impounded 24 head of cattle and five horses.—Tho report war; received. It was decided to offer 2d a dozen for small birds’ eggs, and l£d a dozen for heads, the total amount expended not to exceed £5. Various other matters of detail were attended to.
