THE TRAMWAY SERVICE.
TO THE KOITOB. Sir. — Ar= ;i constant traveller on our trams I dctire to strongly protest against the wav in which the system*,' both power and traffic, arc- being conducted, I laet week, when there were about 1&.000 I visitors to our Citv, -matters just, about ! reached their climax. The' power was j ••off" and "0:1" almost daily, and the trickle of current which reached the car motors was mast exasperating to men who had to be at bue-inca** sharp to time. As for the traffic arrangements, well, in my opinio.il there were none. The Caetle street line-\v:w disgracefully served. One I car evei-v 12 01- 15 minutes for the crowd I who waiusd to travel was simply ludicrous. Scores of intending paseengets were ■left standing at almost every ■ street I corner. The \vhole traffic arrangements of I our evstem want revision. I I beg of you, fir/ to post someone at j thy Southern* Market Reserve almost any- ! time during the day and watch the cars a* thev wend their wav to and from town. You may wait for fiom 7 to 14 minutes without one car passing, then you will see a regular procession of them coming • along, oi'ilv a few yards separating each I ear. = The same thing at times- prevails on ! the George street • line. And can anyone j-f:iv why "the Ta-huna iind St. Kilda cars i l?ave Si. 'Kilda witliin a- minute of each j ether, and practically run into town together '' ! " T;:ke the arrangements made for the ! -theatre-*. 0;m or two cars , wait i a few minutes uir about om> or two j thousand people. Firet come first in and j the rest of the unfortunate people have to j walk. A nice tale cur 15.000 visitors wi'd I have to tell when they get home- about 1 our belated tramway system. For goodncs.3 sake. fir. roiwc the authorities'. Let I them revert to 14 ride?*! for Is, and spend ! the extra money in linking better arrangei meiits for the conveyance of intending j patten cers. —I am, etc.. ! i SUFFEHER. j August 5.
TO THE EllITOI!.
i Sir, —Stoppages on th<? Dunedin City tramway system are much too'frequent. It is a very cierions matter, for a cetoppage of i veil a few minute* puts to much inconvenience hundreds of people. Of course accidents will happen in the best-regulated of tramway systems, j but surely something could bo done to ! lawn the frequency of these accidents. Are the Tramways Committee . starving the maintenance branch, «r what is tho matter'.'—l am, etc.. Constant Teaveli.ee. August 7.
