NORTHUMBERLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 6. (Received August 7. at 8.5 a.m.) In the. final for "the Northumberland Championship M. J. 0. Ritchie (England) beat A. W. Duiilop (Victoria), 2-6, 6-3. 6-2, 6-4. In the Doublet; Doust and Dunlop (Australia) defeated Ritchie and Prcbble, 7-9, 6-2, 6-1 I Last season Ritchie beat Dnust in the singles final, and Dotist.atul Poidevin won the, doubles from Ritchie and Prebble. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.' The- quarterly meeting-of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association will be held on the 28th inst. The following notices of motion have been, given in-reference to the Now Zealand championship*:—-"That arrangements should be' made, is possible, whereby this year's New- Zealand lawn tennis 'championship should be played under altered conditions owing to the holding of tlv> Davis Oup in New Zealand this rear, ll is proposed that the Davis Cup should be plavod en Tuesday, Thursday, and Satmday. 26th, 28th, and 30th December, and that the Now Zealand championships should be played on the intervening days; that the four players remaining in the New Zealand, championship on tbo'"third day and 'the four Davis Cup players shall then play off for the Do minion championship on Monday, Now Years Day, and the day following, if necessary. As the emergencies for 1 he- Davis Cup teams and many leading Australian players will be present on this great occasion, the event promises to be one of unequalled merit, so far as New Zealand is concerned." : By the Canterbury Association :--" Tlintin viow of the occasion' of the Australasian Lawn Tennis Association the Davis Cup contest be played before the New Zealand championship meeting instead of if t.er wards, as proposed; that tho Now Zealand Lawn Teiuiiii Ati-.oeiatiun proceed t.o reconsider the site for the Now Zealand championships on the ground that the proposed sequence of matches in the same. jilaco will militate against the success of the New Zealand championship and make it advisable that the Davis Cup and the JS-ew Zealand championships bo played in different cities; and, ftulher, on the ground that the- Davis Cup contest will for tho time being exhaust tho interest, m tennis in the centre in which it i& held. That, therefore, if the New Zealand championships fira held immediately after tho cup contest and in the same centre vory litt.-le interest will be ta.ken in them, and there is likely to be only a. poor attendance of the. public. That if the New Zealand championships are played after the cup contest-, but in another centre, and, as its probable, some of the cup competitors take part in tho matches, a. large number of those interested in tennis who were unable to attend the, cup cooled, will have an opportunity of seeing some of the world's leading exponents of the. game, play ; a. lad. which must be, of benefit to tennis in New Zealand. That it has been customary to hold a provincial championship and handicap tournament immediately after tho conclusion of the New Zealand championships and in tho samo centre.
