He was considerably agitated upon learning of the sens<uion caused by the interview in the •Review of Reviews-,' which ho described as a grotesque misrepresentation. Ho has cabled'to Mr Stead, stating that the report is grossly misleading. What he stated to Mr Stead, in a brief, hurried- interview, was what he had stated hundreds of times in public speeche.-—namely, that his objective was peace among the. nations of the world. Iris policy one of effective defence, and his aim unity among the British nations. This could best, be attained and maintained by trusting His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, and in the. Dominions by trusting the. responsible Ministers of a. family of nations. '• Referring to the expression 'haul down the flag,* this," he said, "has never entered my mind. To keep it flying is my ambition, with all its best traditions, nor have I ever harbored any idea of Australia breaking away from the* Empire, nor do I wish to escape the duty of defending its honor. Such expressions would not be disloyalty, but insanity. They would be brutal and monstrous."
