CAVERSHAM ELECTION.

EX-CR WILSON ELECTED. The election of a councillor for Caversham WaTd to fill the vacancy caused by the designation of Cr Macassey took place vesterday. The contestants .were ex-Cr wtlsou and Mr J. B. Taverner, who was placed fourth for Caversham Ward at the recent election. The poll resulted as follows : a> g S King Edward street (Kensington) 152 97 David street (Caversham) ... 529 83 St. Clair School Hall 166 14 Totals M 7 194 Majority for Mr Wilson, 653. There were two informal votes—at Caversham—so that the total number of persons who voted was 1.C43. The number eligible to vote was 2,775, so less than half exercised their privilege. On the result being made known at 8.45 p.m. , Mr Wilson said he had to thank heartily all those who had voted for him. They had answered the protests made against Mr Macassey's kindness in resigning so as to allow him (the speaker) to again take bis seat in the City Council. Mr Taverner said the result of the poll was nothing short of a surprise to him. It was perfectly true that he had allowed himself to be* nominated as a protest against a practice that was obtaining. However, that practice had been endorsed bv the electors. He denied the statement that he had put the electors to cons'der; ablo expense over the election. He had no part in creating the vacancy. It was brought about without him. Neither Mr Wilson nor Mr Macassey bad thought proper to see him, although he had contested the election and was fourth on the list. He had given the electors an opportunity of endorsing or not endorsing .Mr Maexissev's action. They had seen fit to endorse "it. More shame to them. He thanked those who had voted for him.
