LIFE-SAVING
A meeting of the Executive of the ne-wly-i'ormcd Otago Branch of the- Lifesaving Sociefy was hold last evening. Mr L'\ 11. Campbell (chairman o£ tho Executive) presided, aud thero wore also present Dr Howard, Messrs J. H. Walker, W. 11. Matthews, J. C. K. Sibbald, D. Da.nnatyne, James, Fyfe, and Gallagher. Lord LslrmrtoH. forwarded notification-of his acceptance of the office of patron to the society. It was decided to appoint a sub-com-mittee, consisting of Messrs fciibbald, Matthews, and Baitnatyne, to act in connection with promoting and organising competitions at regattas, etc. A suggestion that lectures snouJd bo held iu°vai-ioufl centres was loft over till tho winter time. Referring to the development of surf bathing at St. Clair and .St. Kikla, Mt Wbbald said this was an opportunity for the society to do good work. Tho members of tho dub that was being formed would require instruction and assistance in life-saving methods. Probably tho club, later on, would go as far as to get a boat on the lines of oue kept at Manly, Sydney, lor emergency cases. A survey of the coast would have shortly to be undertaken and proper arrangements made to safeguard thoEe- who enjoyed tho .'sport. Mr Park asked if (something could not bo*done in the way of affiliation with tho new society '! Tho Domain Board had the power to grant sites at a peppercorn rental for stands, tents, shelters, etc. Many people did not know that.—On tho motion of Mr Walker, a sub-committoo, consisting of Mass™ Park, Sibbald, Bannatyno, and Matthews, was appointed to look'into tho question and report to next meeting.
