(Received December 7. at 8.40 a.m.) The Premier said that the Budget for the year opened with a credit balance of £637.677. and taking all sources into consideration, closed with surplus of £989.766. The earnings of the railways gave a net return of £4 lis 7d per cent, on the capital expended, and tho tramways a profit of £-1 10s 6d. During the year the railways and tramways carried over 254.000.000 pascngcrs without a single fatality. The Harbor Trust proposed to include largely-increased berthing accommodation for vessels. It is proposed during the current year to finance a. Closer Settlement Fund. By Inking £3so,ooofrom loans there will be £365,000 available, and practically the whole of this sum will be expended in the acquisition of land and on contingent expenses in settling people. The total advances made so far to settlers was £1.362.855. whereof £796,752 was still to be repaid. At the. end of last year the amount of (he Public Debt was £90,307,416.
