A BOER MEMORIAL

where is rr? Tho group of English pecplo in the Transvaal who are asking Boer and Briton alike for subscriptions towards a national memorial to King Edward may be reminded of an affair which they have perhaps forgotten, but which no Transvaal Boer can forget. It might help thcr scheme. Tho late President Kruger is still a national hero to tho .Boers; even tho Progressive Boers who disagreed with s tho policy of his later years remember the glories of his youth. There is at this moment rotting on tho wharves at Delagon, Bay another national monument —the Kruger monument presented to the Transvaal nation by Mr Marks, tho mining magnate. The"monument was seized by the -British during 1110 war. Bound" it 6 base were four bronze allegorical figures of great beauty by the eminent South African sculptor Van Wouw, who has designed the casket which is to be presented to the I)uko of Connaught. These figures, the glory of the monument, were carried off, and though they are known to be in this country, it is not known exactly where. South African rumor has it that one of the figures is in Lord Kitchener's possession and another in Lord Rosebery's, but this cannot be. Of tho remaining two it is said that one was brought to the officers' mess at Aldershot, and the other was believed to be at Chatham. There seem, however, to be no such figures at these places. It is more likely that the figures have been kept by particular regiments, and are being continually moved about from station to station. The Boers are too proud to ask for tho return of this looted property, but it would be a graceful act for us to find and restore it, and a good sendoff for the King Edward memorial subscription.—Manchester ' Guardian.'
