MINING.

The New Trafalgar return was obtained from tho terrace section. The Lady Roxburgh dredge has commenced operations at tho late Jubilee claim. Says tho Arxowtown ‘ Press 3 : —“ On numerous occasions has it been argued that portions of tho land between Arrowtown and Arthur’s Point would pay handsomely if suitable methods wore adopted. It is contended that the original bed of the Shotcver River went through this valley, and judging by tho water-worn rocks and tho general lay of the country there appears to bo much to justify this opinion. Prospects have also been found of a highly encouraging nature. Many years ago, when the dredging boom was at its height, a company partly arranged with farmers for an option over portions of their properties, but, ns far as wo know, nothing came of it. It would not bo a bad idea if the settlers had tho ground tested with the Government’s Keystone borer. One never knows but that they might have mines of wealth at their very doors. It is doddedly worth the experiment.”

Good progress is being made with the construction of the race on tho Grown Terrace. Mr J. Hamilton, under whose supervision the work is being carried out, has tho Brackens water in. _ When tho race cutting is completed, which will bo two or three weeks’ time, the erection of pipes will bo undertaken. The company will have 600 ft to 700 ft .of pressure in the claim. It is stated that the first paddock taken in tho Arrow River bed will be in the vicinity of the old Criterion quartz roof.

The Arrow River Company is sinking a paddock at the mouth of the Billy Creek. It was decided to test the ground there before taking out a paddock in the river bod immediately above this stream.
