A pleasing incident, and an unusual one, occurred as the Wakanui was leaving Port Chalmers, yesterday evening to continue her Homeward loading at Wellington. Mr Somers Vino, chief officer of the \V&karmi, had exchanged ships with Mr Whitehead, chief officer of the Opawa. Mr Vine was on tho wharf when his old ship left. As the lines were being cast off the 11 black squad ” formed up on the big liner’s dock and gave three cheers for Mr Vine, one grim-visaged stoker concluding by calling out: “ God bless every inch of you, sir!” As the ship swung round the sailors also lined up and cheered their ex-chief officer. Furness, Withy, and Co., Ltd., .and the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company have jointly contracted to run a weekly service of fast meat steamers to Liverpool from the Argentine. Tho line is to be ready to start in tho autumn of next year, and arrangements are now being made to build the necessary steamers. It is reported that ten to twelve steamers will bo required for the service. An Lmport;int announcement is made in connection with the Capo Town branch service of the P. and 0. Line, in that the company have decided to turn tho steamers Geelong, Commonwealth, Wilcannia, Wakool, and Narrung into one-class passenger steamers, commencing with the Wakool, which sails from Sydney on February 7. Tho new liners Ballarat and Bendigo, it is interesting to note, will also carry one-class passengers only. Until it took up this service via the Cape the P. and 0.
