“RAILWAY BUSINESS ONLY.”

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Some little time ago there was a circular sent round the 2nd division of the railway threatening any employee with instant dismissal who did work (and was paid for it) other than liis Government job. I can quote the case of one man. who has a largo family and only small wages to keep them on, asking if Iris wife coirid keep a small “grocery shop” to try to meet expenses. After waiting something like four weeks word came hack saying: “ No; you must not do other work for pay.” ' ,1 have just been told on reliable authority that a man working at Hillside Shops, with a salary of £3 3s a week, is secretary of a lodge with a substantial salary. Since last writing I have been making inquiries if tho letters headed “ Hillside Sweating ” had had any effect on the “system” in vogue at Hillside. On every hand I am told that things are even worse than before. I have had long chats with men who have had railway experience, and who have now resigned, all say: “How glad I am that, I left the job.” I asked: “Would you go back again?” and the answer is always “No.” I think the only thing the railway men can do is to stand up as ono body and demand their rights, and to make their influence felt at the next General Election.—l am, etc., Hillside No. 4. November 1.
