FALSE SCALES FRAUDS
The Municipal Commissioners state that dishonest weights and measures in New York are becoming almost as numerous as honest weights and measures—a statement of considerable importance when it is reflected that (he American metropolis has never, in morals, posed as superior to other cities of (ho. United Slates. An earnest effort is now being mode to make butchers, grocers, and fruiterers comply with the law, and give their customers something approximating to a “ square deal.” It is complained that some manufacturers of scales and makers of measures actually encourage dishonesty in tradesmen by recommending to them special appliances for weighing and measuring known as “ easy money-getters.” Here is a sample circular sent out by one firm of scale manufacturers ; Can you do this on your scale? Buy 201 hj of pork loins at 9 cents a pound, retail them to your trade at the same price, and get your money back? Well, we can on our scales, and make you 3 per cent, profit besides. If your business amounts to lOdol sales, we can earn you 30 cents in fractions you don’t get now. Thirty cents a day raeians you buy this scale every 180 days. How long have you been in business? How many have you bought in that time? Think of it! One scale lost every six mouths! Let our man prove you this. Stricter measures are also being taken to enforce honest dealing in the delivery of coal. The number of weighing stations where customers on complaint are entitled to have their coal weighed after they have been tendered for delivery at the bouse are being increased.—New York correspondent London ‘ Daily Telegraph.’
