GREAT INCREASE IN EXPENDITURE
THE REASON WHY.
LONDON, July 7,
In the House of Commons during the Budget debate, Mr Asquith, in reply to a charge that the Government were responsible for the excessive expenditure, said that the growth of the civil expenditure was enormous, but it was unjust for any section of the House to denounce it unless tliat section was prepared to retrace the steje made in the direction of social reform. Similarly the granting of old age pensions was duo to demands from sill parts of the House. Despite the increase# burdens for Defence and Social Reform, be claimed that the present system of finance had proved itself capable of carrying the country to a safe haven.
