Now England - literature is full of references to the spiritual influences of Boston baked beans, but it has somehow been difficult to got any information about them that is definite and statistical. It has lately been revealed, however, that Boston’s consumption of beans readied the total of 589,919 bushels in 1908 and 536,863 bushels in 1909. In spite of this recent decline, the bean bill for 1909, amounting to nearly 5,000,000d01, was an increase of about 1,700,000d0l over that of the previous year, for the price of this vegetable, admitted to bo so necessary to the maintenance of the New England type of character, has gone up 33 i per cent, during the last two years. Two make the situation still worse, salt pork, which is “ used in cooking beans,” has jumped from lie to 18c a pound. .
