FOOTBALL

NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. The Management Committee met at. Wellington last evening. H. M'lntyro forwarded particulars of a scheme whereby country players could be brought under the notice of the selectors of New Zealand teams. His suggestion was that a team of players from the country unions should be selected, and matches played at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, the teams to be known as the New Zealand country teams. —Referred to a sub-committee.

The Appeal Council forwarded their decision upholding the appeal of (ho Otago Rugby Union against the action of the New Zealand Rugby Union in acceding to the appeal of L. M. Tansey against his disqualification by the Otago Union for six playing Saturdays. The Appeal Council did not accept the contention of the Now Zealand Union that the evidence given by one player against another at an inquiry (as was done in this case) was privileged The principle was a wrong one, because the Committee should have power to inquire into any matter that might tend to bring discredit upon football and to punish offenders.

A copy of the statement of their case in the appeal against the disqualification of J. Marshall for two years by the Now Zealand Rugby Union was forwarded by tho Wellington Union.—A sub-committee was appointed to draw up the New Zealand Union’s caso for submission to the Appeal Council.

A number of disqualifications made by various unions were endorsed and made general. Tho fixing of the date for the interisland match was dcfexrcd until intimation is received from the various unions as to their programme of representative matches this season.

The Committee resented tho remarks made by members of the Wellington Union concerning the members of the former body flourishing fico passes at matches, and it was decided to bring the matter before the Wellington Union in order to remove an erroneous impression.

THE SYDNEY CARNIVAL,

[Special to the Stau.] CHRISTCHURCH, July 8. Dr Thacker, who is on his way to see the sculling match on the Zambesi, writes an Interesting letter from Sydney to a friend in this city. As an old representative footballer, ho writes with some authority on the big matches recently played in Sydney. Dr Thacker and his party saw the matches between tho New Zealand Maori team and the Californian Universities representatives. Of tho latter he says: “Their future is undoubted. They are of the best type of athletes. They are clean amateurs, and evidently play for sport. We were unpatriotic enough to wish that they had beaten the Maoris. Their collaring" and footwork were quite above ordinary New Zealand football. They were evidently new to the game, and clid not understand handling the ball in a crisp, nippy manner. We saw the first and second games between Australia and New Zealand, and consider that Australia should have won on both occasions. Our New Zealand man seemed tired, and each one seemed to be waiting for the others to do something to help them on, with the exception of two or three forwards and two or three backs. In the first match our full-back (O’Leary) had a fairly severe

spill, and, to my mind, should have retired, as ho was apparently in a dazod condition for the remainder of the game.”

F. Ivimey and A.' Patterson (Otago) and Ridland (Southland), members of the New Zealand team that recently toured Australia, reached Dunedin by yesterday’s first express from the North.
