o The Most Rev. William SaumarezSmith, Archbishop oi Sydney (Anglican), Metropolitan of New South Wales, and Primate of Australia, is dead ; aged seventy-three years. A London message advises the death of Ciesar Cza-rnikow, 6iigar merchant. In response tc a numerously-signed requisition, Mr A. J. Butterfield "has decided to stand, for re-election as mavor of Maori Hill. Madame Melba and her party left Dunedin for Oamaru by the 11.15 a.m. express to-day. The famous singer, who is still decidedly larne, though she rested all day on Sund-iy, was accompanied to tho station by a few personal friends. At the recent sitting of the University Senate Mr W. barrister, of this City, was admitted to the degree ol Master of Laws on tho examination for honors in law previously passed by him. Mr William Thompson has been, .nominated as councillor for Musselburgh Ward, St. Kilda.
