BRASS BANDS' COMPETITION.
<• [Pee United Prkss association.] CHRISTCHURCH, December 29. The brass band events in the Christchurch Competitions Society's contests began to-day, the Judge being Mr Short, King's trumpeter, grade B being taken. The first event was B flat cornet contest. Of the ten entries only five competitors took part. The judge selected Thompson (Elite Band) and Munio (Timaru Marine) to contest the final in the evening. There were only two competitors in the baritone section, both Elite bandsmen. The final will be taken this evening. .Three out of four entrants played in tbe I'! flat bass. Rowlands and Higman. both belonging to the Elite Band, will play in the final. B flat trombones and B flat basses play the preliminary contest this afternoon, and those chosen for the final in the evening, when grade B bands also play tho test selection.
