MEETINGS AND SOCIALS.

OTAGO CHESS CLUB. Members of the Otago Chess Club assembled in good numbers last night to a farewell social given at the club rooms in honor of Mr 0. Balk, who is leaving Dunedin tor a trip to the Old Country. Mr Balk has been closely identified with the club for some time, having held the offices of president and treasurer, besides which he is a cheas player of thirty-four yearn’ standing, and has founded chess clubs in such widely-separated places as Oxford (England) and Yokohama. Last, night's gathering was marked by great cordiality. The president of the club (Mr G. Wright) was in the chair, and besides members there were several visitors present. A silver-mounted malacca walking stick was presented to Mr Balk on behalf of the members of the club by the Rev. A. T. Chodowski, and the toast of the guest of the evening was proposed by Mr R. A. Clclond. The toast of “ Parliament " was proposed by Mr S. S. Myers, and rcsixmded to humorously by Mr A. R. Barclay, M.P. Mr J. Edwards proposed the toast of “The Visitors." which was replied to by Messrs M'Kechnic and Boyle, while Mr Mouat replied to the toast of “The Press.’’ An enjoyable programme of songs and recitations was contributed to bv Messns J. Stone, P. Braithwaite, J. Edwards, S. S. Myers. L. Warsaw, Phillips Boyle, and M’Kochnie. Y.M.C.A. The first of two meetings of the Y.M.C.A. was held last evening for the purpose of considering a report on the future polity of the Association, also a new constitn tion. The whole matter was referred to a special committee to bring up a report for adoption at a meeting to be held on the 25th inst.

BIBLE RESEARCH SOCIETY. The Bible and Scientific Research Society held a meeting on Sunday afternoon, when Mr Neil read an essay on ‘ God : His being, His attributes, and how to know Him.’ Discussion followed. DEBATING SOCIETY. The Dundas Street Primitive Methodist Literary and Debating Society held their annual meeting last evening. There was a good attendance, the small hall bein'quite full. The annual report., showing the society to be in a very healthy condH lion, was adopted. The treasurer’s report showed a credit balance. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Rev W. Layoock; president, Mr R. Brinslev; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Barnes and H C. South; secretary, Mr J. Cable; treasurer, Mr W. Butcher; editor of Journal. Miss N. M'Nair. It was decided to meet in future on Friday evening instead <J Tuesday. Fifteen new members werr elected. A short programme was gotv through, the following contributingMr Butcher (solo), Miss Mitchell (solo), Mastei Drake (solo), Mr W. Roberts (recitation).
