INFANT LIFE PROTECTION.

A meeting of the Society for Promoting the Health of Women and Children was held in the Town Hall yesterday; present —Mrs Hosting (in the chair), Meed antes Donald( Hams, Fail, W. S. Roberts, Ramsay, O’Neill, Callaway, King, and Denniston, Drs Agatha Adams and Siedeberg, Misses Beswick and Holford, and the secretary (Mrs Carew). Ihe President reported on the recent visit of the delegates to Christchurch and Wellington. Satisfaction was expressed at rv? ■c«r SU interview with the Hon. Dr Findlay, and it was announced that the following telegram had been received by the president of the society from the Minister of Justice:—“ Referring to the Request your letter of the 29th ult. that full public inquiry odd investigation be held m connection with homes under the Infant Life Protection Act kept by Miss and Mrs , I may inform you that the Government hare decided that an alteration shall bo made in regard to coutrollmg tbo department under the Infant Life Protection Act, the decision being that the control shall now be placed under the Education Department, which has hitherto dealt with children under the Industrial Schools Act, and legislation will be introduced to give effect to this decision. It is hoped that the alteration will take c n. r m the - present *«6sion Parliament. Under the circumstances, the inquiry in regard to these homes would appear to be unnecessary.”

With a view to encouraging tho best feeding for unfortunate babies, it was resolved that humanised milk be delivered to the keepers of licensed homes at Id per bottle, which is little more than half tho pnee of ordinary milk. In furtherance of the same object, a enb-oomnritteo was appointed, consisting of Mesdames Harris, Donald, King, and Dr Adams, to arrange a scheme for offering a number of money prizes, ranging from £5 to £l, to licensed homo keepers for the bcst-carcd-for babies.

The seven babies at Karitanc were reported as all flourishing, and another case for admission was brought before tho Committee, A cheque for £SO was handed in as a. donation from Mr Wolf Harris, who therefore becomes a life member of the society.

A telegram was received from Dr Truby from Christchurch, saving that aii enthusiastic public meeting, presided over by the mayor, had boon held there, and that a society had been, formed on similar lines to the Dnnedin society. It was announced that the Players’ Club, under the direction of Mies Newman Potts* were going to produce ‘ThoCountry Mouse’ on the 18th and 19th September, and that part of the proceeds were to be devoted to uio funds of the society.
