ROSLYN COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Roslyn Bor* ough Council, held last night* Was attended by tho Deputy-Mayor (Gr A. Matheson) and Grs Bell, Wilkinson, Stevenson, 'Todd, A. L\l'Mi]lan, J, A. MiMillan, and Calden —Reports.:—

The Works Committee reported that correspondence had been dealt with as follows; —From Messrs Haggitt, Brent, and Williams. advising as to taking poll for authority to enter into a contract for water with the City Council. Recommended that an agreement be come to with the City Council lor a term of years to enoble the poll to be taken. —From Messrs Haggitt, Brent, and Williams, submitting draft agreement frith the City Council respecting the transmission lines passing through the borough, as amended by the City Council’s solicitors. Recommended that this Council adhere to the terms of the agreement'as originally subjhltted, and that the clerk be' adthbrised €6 consult Mr Watson Munro, as - -the Courioil's expert adviser* respecting the proposed amendment in clause 2 of the draft agreement. —The Committee further recommended that the offer of John O’Donnell to Supply 2Jin metal on the Council’s land near the reserve road at 3s per yard be accepted, conditionally on the surface, of the land being restored; that the tender bf Put-ton Bros, for works and metal in Janies street, for the Sum of £52, be accepted.—Report adopted. The Finance Committee repotted that accounts amounting t0.£544- 18s id had been passed for payment* ‘The bank overdraft stood at £4,404.; current revenue, £1,474 12s 7d. Correspondence: From Messrs Haggitt, Brent, and Williams submitting proof of debenture for water loan, with conditions. Recommend that the conditions be, approved, and; that the dale of tendering for the debentures’be altered to' 1 25th January nCxt; debentures 16 bo dated Ist February; that the 'issue of such debentures be as follows; —£2,000 of the loan in February* £B,OOO in July, and dESjOOO or ariy less amount in October,. 1907; that , the borough treasurer be authorised,to countersign the debentures and coupons.—From the Treasury notifying payment of £l9l Ss, on account of subsidy. Received.—Tito Committee also recommended that, the tender of Mr James Moir for the supply of dbg registration collars for 1907, at the prices quoted, be accepted.—Adopted.

Tho Fire Brigade Committed recommended that the balance of the subsidy for the financial year ending 31st March, 1907, amounting to £25, be passed for payment. With reference to the new Fire Brigades Bill, the Committee advised that consideration of this Bill be deferred until after tho Fire Brigade Conference in March next.—Adopted. —Correspondence.—

The District Health Inspector (Mr W. E. Gladstone) wrote complaining of a fowl run on tub property at No. 7 Frederick street.— Notice to be sent to the owner. The Hon. J. A. Millar acknowledged with gratitude the Council’s letter transmitting copy of resolution expressing sympathy With him in hie recent bereavement.—Received: Under date November 25, the Town Clerk of Dunedin wrote that, in accordance With the provisions of aeclion 12 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1904, the Council Chamber, Town Hall, hod been appointed as the place and Wednesday, 16th January, at 7.15 p.m. the lime for holding the conference of delegates for the purpose of deciding on which day of the week shops shall bo dosed in the combined district of Dunedin. One delegate was to attend from the Roslyn Council.— Received; Cr Stevenson appointed delegate to attend the Council. Messrs Bunny, Rawnon, and PC th crick, Wellington, wrote that clients of theirs had instructed them to inquire whether the Council had arranged the loan lately authorised by ratepayers of Roslyn, as they were prepared to negotiate for the same.—Town clerk to reply. . , —Debentures for Water Loan.— Cr Wilkinson proposed his motion* of which notice had been given—” That the resolution fan;, the nulnbcr of debentures to he tendered tor ou the 10th January be rescinded.” The mover stated that it was not his desire to override the resolution which was canted at the last meeting of Council. His sole object was to give tho Council the opportunity of getting the very best terms for the it was possible to get. It did not alter the contention made at the last meeting that by doing it according to the resolution standing on the books it gave the small investors a show. His motion did not affect i.ho small investors or place them at any disadvantage; it merely extended the field, so that they could have tenders either for the whole or for portion of the money. The Mayor Said that as farm he could see it did not prejudice tho Council in any way to call for tenders for the whole amount. At the same time, the Council had already adopted (in the Finance Committee’s report) a somewhat different set of amounts to he tailed for Cr J. A. M'Millan seconded, and the motic n was earned. —General.— Cr Ellis tendered an apology for unavoidable absence The dog tax for 1907 was fixed at 10s per dog Cr Slc-ienson. as delegate lo the conference re the weekly half-holiday, was inif uctcl to vote for having the holiday on Batufinr.
