We are pleased to hear thai the Hon. Geo. McLean passed a satisfactory night, that Tuesday's operation was successful, and that his medical attendants have-every hope of a permanent recovery. Mr Justice Edwards, whose health has for 6ome time past 6hown a need .for recruiting, is to receive twelve months' leave of absence for a holiday trip. His Honor, accompanied by Sirs and Miss Edwards, will leave Auckland shortly to catch the P. and 0. steamer Mongolia, which leaves Sydney on Fehrnnry 2. They will travel by her as fax a« Egypt, where thev propose to stay for some little time at C;iiro, afterwards" visiting Tunis and Algiers. Tbo journey to England will be resmix*! in time to reach London in tlie late spring. Visits, to Continental cities are to bo included in later arrangements, and a return will in all probability be made by way of China and Jap-in. The party will be absent from New Zealand till about the end of January, 1908. Mt Steve Casey, of the " All Blacks," who has becomo a Benedict, was presented during tlio dinner hour yesterday with a oarvinir s/-t, also a cruet stand and satclwl for Mrs Casey, from the- men working in the Hillsido vard under the supervision of Mi Millar. Mt M'Allan acted as spokesman on behalf of the hands. Mr Donild P.eid, sen., is to be asked bo speak at Baklutha at an carry date in opposition to the Land Bill. At las*, night's meeting tho City Council passed a resolution of condolence with tho relatives of the late Mr Hugh Gourley. The Mayor and Cr Gore, who was a contemporary of the deceased gentleman in the Council many years ago, paid a tribute to tho public usefulness of Mr Gourley in many capacities, and Cr Gore mentioned (hat many people in this City wonld miss the aejisfcance of one who qui<"tly did many acts of kindness. The St. Clair School Committee unanimously decided last riiirbt to recommend Miss "Isabella Cooper for appointment as mistrers, in place of Miss MriTchbanks (resigned).
